The John Morden Centre in London\u00a0by UK studio\u00a0Mae Architects\u00a0has been named the winner of this year\u2019s\u00a0RIBA Stirling Prize. Described as \u201ca place of joy and inspiration\u201d by the Stirling Prize jury, the building is a daycare centre for the residents of the Morden College retirement community. It is the first time that Mae Architects, which was also\u00a0shortlisted for last year\u2019s prize, has won the UK\u2019s top honour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The John Morden Centre is a place of joy and inspiration. This building provides comfort and warmth, with thoughtful features designed to prevent\u00a0isolation. It illustrates how buildings can themselves be therapeutic \u2013 supporting care and instilling a sense of belonging. Great architecture orients people so they can thrive, and this building is exemplary at achieving exactly that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Built from a cross-laminated frame, the building is an addition to a retirement community with 300 residents in Blackheath, southeast London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It contains medical facilities, including doctor and physiotherapy consultation rooms, as well as a cafe, art studios and a 100-seat events space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the key aims of the building was to create spaces that help foster a community atmosphere that would help combat loneliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe John Morden Centre\u2019s elegance and efficacy set a high standard for spaces that support healthier, happier and more independent lives. It illustrates the positive potential of architecture to strengthen vibrant and active communities,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is a skilfully designed package that minimises the building\u2019s impact on our planet\u2019s delicate ecology, while also harnessing the therapeutic value of the surrounding nature. It stands as a testament to the vision and ambition\u00a0of Morden College, M\u00e6\u2019s creativity \u2013 and the exemplary collaboration between them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year\u2019s Stirling Prize was chosen by a jury that included OMA partner Van Loon along with Foster + Partners senior partner Armstrong Yakubu, journalist Mona Chalabi, Buckley Gray Yeoman head of sustainability Rachael Owens, Autodesk head of industry associations strategy Marek Suchocki and Niall McLaughlin Architects founder Niall McLaughlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last year\u2019s prize was won by\u00a0a\u00a0brick and timber\u00a0library\u00a0at the\u00a0University of Cambridge\u00a0by\u00a0Niall McLaughlin Architects. In 2021, the prize was awarded to\u00a0Kingston University London \u2013 Town House by Grafton Architects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
